Spending by category

See where your money goes, sorted without the busywork

Transactions arrive categorized, your corrections become rules, and anything the app isn't sure about waits in a review queue instead of landing in the wrong place quietly.

Categorized on arrival

Transactions from connected accounts come in with Plaid's categories. When Plaid is very confident, the category is accepted automatically. When it isn't, the transaction goes to your review queue.

A review queue that learns

The queue groups uncertain transactions by merchant and suggests a category for each group, so ten coffee-shop charges take one tap, not ten. Every decision can be undone.

  • Categorize a transaction by hand and the app offers to remember it as a rule.
  • Rules match a merchant exactly or by what it contains, optionally with an amount, and the most specific rule wins.
  • Apply a new rule to past transactions in one go.

Spending by category, this month

The By category view shows a breakdown of the month, each category's spending against its limit, budget alerts, and your pace compared with the same day last month. Interest charged and money moving between your own accounts are shown separately, so they don't distort the picture.

Trends over time

The Trends view shows spending by category or overall cash flow across the last 6 months, the last 12 months or the year to date, so a creeping category is easy to spot.

Clean names, tags and notes

Rename cryptic bank descriptions once and every matching transaction follows. Add tags for anything categories don't capture, like a trip or a renovation, attach notes, and exclude transfers or reimbursed costs from spending.

  • Search, and filter by account, category, tag, amount range and date.
  • Household members can categorize each other's transactions, and merchant names are shared.

Recurring charges in view

Subscriptions and other repeating charges that Plaid detects on your connected accounts are listed and fed into your budget's calendar, which makes the forgotten ones easier to find.

What it doesn't do

  • Categories are a fixed list; there are no custom categories yet. Tags are the way to group things your own way.
  • Transactions can't be split across categories.
  • Recurring detection relies on what Plaid finds in your connected accounts.
  • Bank sync is part of Pro. On the free plan, you add transactions by hand.
