Questions and answers
How My AI Fin App works, what's free, what Pro adds, and how your data is handled. Plain answers, no fine print.
Getting started
What is My AI Fin App?
A personal finance app built around getting out of debt. You add your cards, loans, and mortgage, or connect your banks, pick a payoff strategy, and get a plan with a date on it. Around that plan it tracks spending, a budget built on your real pay and due dates, net worth, and savings goals, for you or your whole household.
How long does setup take?
About fifteen minutes to add your debts by hand, less if you connect a bank and import them. The payoff plan works as soon as the debts are in. Budget, goals, and everything else can come later.
Do I have to connect my bank?
No. Manual entry is a full path: add debts, transactions, and budget lines yourself and every feature works. Connect a bank later if you'd like the app to keep things current for you.
Can I import from Mint, YNAB, Rocket Money, or a spreadsheet?
Not yet. There is no file importer today. If your accounts are with a bank Plaid supports, connecting it pulls in balances, transactions, and debts, which covers most of what an import would. If you need a CSV importer, tell us through the contact page. It helps us decide what to build next.
Which languages and currencies are supported?
English, Spanish, and French, switchable any time. Amounts display in the currency you choose in settings, including US, Canadian, and Australian dollars, euros, pounds, yen, Swiss francs, and yuan.
Pricing and billing
Is it really free?
Yes. Everything you can enter by hand is free, with no ads and no data selling. Bank sync is the Pro feature, and it's included free for everyone during early access. When billing starts we'll give notice, and the free features stay free.
What does Pro include, and what does it cost?
Pro is $5.99 a month or $49 a year. It's automatic bank sync: connections through Plaid, a nightly refresh of balances and transactions, debts imported with their real APR and minimum payment, and transactions that arrive with merchant names and categories. Everything else in the app is in Free.
Why charge for bank sync and not something else?
Because it's the one feature that costs us money every month. Plaid charges per connected institution, and Pro covers that. Nothing we build ourselves is behind the paywall.
When does billing start, and what happens to my account?
We're in early access, so Pro is included free for everyone right now. Before billing starts we'll give notice in the app and by email. If you don't subscribe then, your bank connections pause and everything already synced stays in your account as regular data you can keep editing by hand.
Will free features ever move behind the paywall?
No. The free tier is the product, not a trial. Pro only adds the things that cost us money to run.
Can I cancel?
Yes. Once billing exists you'll be able to cancel from settings at any time and keep using the free features with all your data.
Why publish a price you're not charging?
So you can decide whether it's worth it later. $5.99/mo or $49/yr is what Pro will cost. Early access is free because the app isn't finished, not because the price is undecided.
Debt payoff
Snowball or avalanche, which should I pick?
Avalanche pays the highest interest rate first and costs the least overall. Snowball pays the smallest balance first and gives you wins sooner. The calculator shows both with the dates and the interest, so you can choose with numbers rather than a rule of thumb.
Where does the monthly payment for each debt come from?
Each debt is planned around one stable monthly amount. If you've set a planned payment, that wins. For a synced card, the app applies the issuer's own minimum rate to today's balance. If the bank's minimum was captured during a grace period and wouldn't even cover the interest, it plans 1% of the balance plus a month of interest instead, so the balance actually shrinks. Loans use the bank-reported payment, your manual entry, or the amortized figure from the loan terms. A card with nothing else gets the 1% plus interest estimate, with a $25 floor.
What is the interest warning?
If a payment can't cover the interest a balance earns in a month, the balance grows even though you're paying. The Debts page names those debts and the calculator flags them, so you can raise the payment before the plan runs on numbers that never end.
Which kinds of debt can I track?
Credit cards, with promotional APRs and their end dates, credit limits, and statement balances. Mortgages, with escrow, property tax, insurance, and PMI. Auto loans, with a VIN lookup that fills in year, make, and model. Student loans, personal loans, and anything else with a balance and a rate.
Can I see the plan month by month, or export it?
Yes. The calculator shows both strategies with the payoff date, total interest, and interest saved, a balance chart, and a month-by-month schedule you can download as CSV.
Does the extra payment roll over when a debt is paid off?
Yes. When a debt is cleared, its payment joins the extra and moves to the next target automatically. That rollover is what makes the date move as fast as it does.
Bank sync (Pro)
How does bank sync work, and is it safe?
Connections go through Plaid, the same service most banking apps use. You sign in on Plaid's screen, so your bank password never reaches us. We receive balances and transactions, refresh them nightly, and you can disconnect from settings at any time.
Does it work with Apple Card?
Yes. The iPhone app reads Apple Card, Apple Cash and Apple Savings straight from Wallet through Apple's FinanceKit, with no bank login. Open Settings, then Connected Institutions, and tap Connect Apple Wallet; iPhone asks which accounts to share. The card comes in as a debt with its balance, credit limit and minimum due, Cash and Savings as accounts, and every purchase with the merchant's name. It updates each time you open the app, and shows on the web too. Needs iOS 17.4 or later and Pro.
What gets imported?
Accounts and balances, transactions with merchant names and categories, and for cards and loans the APR, minimum payment, statement balance, last payment, and next due date. Investment accounts come in with their balances for net worth.
Which banks are supported?
Any institution Plaid supports, which covers most US banks, credit unions, card issuers, and loan servicers.
How often does it refresh?
Every night, for every member of your household, plus a Sync button whenever you want it now.
I already added a debt by hand. Will syncing create a duplicate?
The app checks for likely matches when you import from a bank and offers to link the synced account to the debt you already have. You can also link or unlink from the account's own menu.
How do I disconnect a bank?
Settings, then Institutions. Disconnecting removes the connection at Plaid as well, so nothing keeps syncing in the background. The transactions and debts you already have stay as regular data.
AI assistants
Can I ask Claude or ChatGPT about my finances?
Yes. My AI Fin App has a connector (an MCP server) that lets an AI assistant read your data with exactly the access you have in the app, and tidy your transactions if you allow it. Set it up under Settings, Assistants. It is part of Pro.
Which assistants work?
Anything that speaks MCP. Claude Code, Claude Desktop and Cursor use a personal access token you create in Settings. claude.ai and ChatGPT custom connectors sign in with your My AI Fin App account instead of a token, and you can see and disconnect them under Settings, Assistants. ChatGPT uses the same sign-in flow as claude.ai but we have not tested it end to end yet; if it will not connect, tell us through the contact page.
What can I ask?
How you are doing this month, spending by category, merchant or month, what subscriptions you pay for, when your debts are paid off under different strategies, whether you will be short before payday, your net worth over time, what bills are coming up, and anything else the data can answer. Ask the assistant "what can you do with my finances?" and it will list everything.
Can it change my data?
Only with a read and write token, and only in four ways: categorise transactions, mark transfers and reimbursements so they do not count as spending, add a note to a transaction, and set a category budget. It can never link a bank, add or edit accounts, debts or goals, move money, or delete anything.
What does the assistant see?
The same data your own sign-in can read in the app, including shared household data, and nothing more. The connector runs every query as you, under the same row-level security the app uses. A token acts as you, so treat it like a password: it is shown once, and you can revoke it in Settings the moment you stop trusting the device it lives on.
What do you record when I use an assistant?
Which tools were called and whether they worked, for 90 days, so we can see what is used and what fails. We never record what you asked, the text of any SQL (only which tables it read), amounts, or the data returned. You can see your own recent activity under Settings, Assistants.
What are gap reports?
An assistant could once record a one-sentence, detail-free description of something it could not do with your data, if you switched this on. The feature is paused: nothing new is recorded. Anything saved earlier is listed in Settings → Assistants, where you can delete it.
How do I disconnect an assistant?
Revoke or delete its token under Settings, Assistants. It stops working immediately. For claude.ai or ChatGPT, also remove the connector in that assistant's settings.
Does it cost extra?
No. AI assistant access is included in Pro, alongside bank sync. During early access everyone has Pro.
Spending and budgeting
How are transactions categorized?
Synced transactions arrive with a category from your bank's data, mapped to the app's categories. The ones the app isn't confident about go to a review queue where you confirm or change them. Manual transactions you categorize as you add them, and rules take care of the rest.
What is a category rule?
A rule says that anything from this merchant goes in this category. Create one when you correct a transaction and it applies to every future match, and optionally to the past ones too.
What is safe to spend?
Your category budgets for the month minus what you've spent so far, with a per-day figure for the days that are left.
What is the calendar view?
Paydays and bills placed on the days they happen, with the running balance, so you can see the tight weeks before they arrive.
What are annual expenses and sinking funds?
Annual expenses are bills that come once or twice a year, like insurance, registration, or a yearly subscription. Sinking funds are the monthly amounts you set aside so those bills and big purchases are already paid for when they arrive. Both show up in the budget spread across the months.
Does it find recurring charges?
Yes. Subscriptions and regular bills are detected from your transactions and listed together, so you can see what you pay every month and catch the ones you forgot about.
Households
Can my partner use it with me?
Yes. Create a household and invite them by email. You'll share debts, budget, goals, and transactions, and each member's bank connections feed the same picture. Roles keep it clear who can change what.
What can each role do?
Owners run the household: invitations, members, and settings. Members can add and edit debts, accounts, transactions, and goals. Viewers can see everything and change nothing.
Is there a limit on members?
No.
Can I keep some accounts private from my household?
Not today. A household shares its data, and each debt and account is labeled with who it belongs to. If you have finances that need to stay private, keep them in a separate account outside the household.
Do my partner's bank connections sync too?
Yes. Each member connects their own institutions, and the nightly refresh covers everyone.
What are transaction comments?
A note thread on any transaction, visible to the household. Useful for "that was the vet, not groceries".
Security and privacy
How is my data protected?
Encrypted in transit and at rest, hosted on Supabase with row-level access rules so a household's data can only be read by that household. Bank connections go through Plaid, and we never see your bank password.
Do you sell my data or show ads?
No and no. Our revenue is Pro subscriptions, not you.
Is there two-factor authentication?
Yes, with an authenticator app. Settings also shows your sign-in history and active sessions, and lets you sign out other devices.
What happens with a weak or leaked password?
New passwords are checked against known breaches and rejected if they've been exposed.
Can I hide balances?
Yes. An eye button masks every amount on the device you're using, for opening the app in public.
Can I take my data with me?
Yes. Export everything as CSV from settings, and delete your account from the same place when you want it gone.
What happens when I delete my account?
Your account and its financial data are removed and can't be recovered. Disconnect your banks first from settings if you want to be sure nothing stays linked at Plaid.
Devices and access
Is there a phone app?
You can install it from your phone's browser today and it works like an app, with its own icon and full screen. Native App Store and Google Play builds are in progress.
How do I install it on my phone?
Open myaifin.app in Safari on iPhone or Chrome on Android, tap Share or the browser menu, then Add to Home Screen.
Does it work offline?
Once installed it opens without a connection and shows the last data it loaded. Saving changes needs a connection.
Does it support dark mode?
Yes. It follows your system setting, or you can pick light or dark in settings.
Which browsers work?
Current versions of Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, on desktop, tablet, and phone.
